Picking a storage unit sounds like a quick, simple, and easy task. While the process of actually getting a storage unit is a breeze, it can be difficult to pick your unit if you’ve never picked one before or if you aren’t sure what you need. But don’t worry: at Total Storage Solutions, our friendly staff can help you pick out the storage unit that works best for you.

Need a little more help? We’ve got you. Here are some helpful hints you can use at Total Storage Solutions when renting your next storage unit.

Figure Out Your Needs

The first thing on your list should be to figure out exactly what needs to go into your storage unit. After all, if you don’t know what you’re going to store, it’ll be hard to find a unit that will work without paying for way more than you need. It will also help you determine if you need a moving truck or if you can make do with your own vehicle.

This also means that you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to search for a storage unit even though you may already know the size that you need. Waiting could lead to your location of choice not having any availability in the unit and facility you want.

Your needs aren’t just limited to space, either. Each one of our facilities in Texas, Arizona, California, and Utah has other features that can help make your self storage experience a good one. From climate control to drive-up access and more, check the facility nearest you to find a list of their features.

Maximize Your Space

Once you’ve figured out where you’re going to store your belongings and what size unit you need, now it’s time to figure out how to maximize the space you have in your storage unit. You don’t want to get a unit that’s too big for your needs, unless you know that you are at some point going to add more things to your unit.

Start out by labeling your boxes. You can get as detailed as you want, but making sure your boxes are labeled will make things easier to find when you need to get something out of your unit. That way you’re not frantically searching through your unit hoping you find the right box you’re looking for.

Make sure fragile items are marked as such so don’t forget when it’s time to empty the unit and you break something valuable.

What Can You Store?

Our customers store a wide variety of items in our storage units. Some of the most common items include:

  • Appliances
  • Household goods
  • Seasonal items
  • Electronics
  • Clothing
  • Miscellaneous boxes and documents

With that being said, there are some items we don’t allow in units due to safety and legal reasons. Some of these items include:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Living animals and plants
  • Combustible items
  • Perishable items
  • Ammunition
  • Unregistered vehicles (including motorcycles)

If you have any questions about vehicle storage or other storage, feel free to ask our facility manager for specifics. We’re happy to help.
