It’s the very best in the world. Just one cup of our incredible Kona coffee gets you ready for anything. You can conquer house cleaning, spruce up the yard and reorganize your self storage unit. Kailua-Kona, HI coffee lovers love this delicious start to the day, but how much do you know about our famous bean’s background?
From Just a Few Clippings
We’re very grateful to American missionary Samuel Ruggles and his love for a good cup of coffee. He brought clippings from Brazilian trees with him when he settled here in 1828. That stroke of botanical good luck was made even better by our rich volcanic soils and mild, sunny climate. By the late 19th century, extensive plantation systems helped establish Kona coffee as the very best of its kind. Today, Hawaii’s beloved bean supports more than 800 farms with production totaling over 2 million pounds a year. That’s not bad for a crop that started out as just a few clippings.
A Walk Through Coffee History
If you wonder how our favorite export has become a such an important cultural treasure, spend an afternoon at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm. The site became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and brings the past to life with self-guided tours. Stroll through the coffee orchards, explore the coffee mill and roam through the beautiful farmhouse. Be sure to check the Farm’s schedule for different events. Several times a year, members of the Kona Historical Society bring their beautiful, period costumes out of storage units and stage special tours.
Cooking with Kona
One of our favorite things about Kona coffee is how good it can be outside the mug. If you don’t have any recipes in your pantry that call for coffee as an ingredient, perk up your next culinary creation with one of these ideas.
- Add finely ground coffee to brown sugar and butter, and turn popcorn into a Kona caramel treat.
- A tablespoon of coarsely ground Kona really kicks up shortbread cookie recipes.
- Bring out the best in your spice rubs for roasts with a generous pinch of coffee.
- Bake up the ultimate coffee cake using Kona as your secret ingredient.
- Take tapioca to new flavor heights by gently simmering it in brewed coffee.
Cooking with Kona can be habit forming, so stock up when you get the chance. Buying bulk helps hold down the price, and you can keep backup stash fresh in your climate-controlled self storage unit.
